Finished length 14in
I started with welding steel 1/8 x 3/4 about
14in long comes on 4 food lengths from ACE it is
not tempered to start with and easier to grind
and file
Cut then grind to the shape of the blade then
with the grinder beveled the edge for a doubled
edged blade. After getting it down to a rough
edge I used a single cut file and draw filed the
finished edge.
Then used the instructions in the books to
temper the blade to make hard i used my gas
stove and it worked just fine.
The Bolster is cut from brass (also from ACE)
and ground and filed and fitted over Tang.
Drilled a small hole in the end of the Tang
ran a copper wire through the hole and folded
back and soldered in place.
Made the handle from the same branch
(Eucalyptus used for the Wand and the rest of
the branch will be used for the staff when I get
to it) mad two pieces shaping it to fit over the
Tang and wires out the back.
After the epoxy set I the made 3 ring cuts
around the handle for the wire to be inlaid also
using the openings from the 2 piece and the cuts
I folded the wire into the openings and the cuts
around the handle and gluing it in place. Then
grinding the tops of the wire making it flat
with the wood making it look inlaid.
The Butt is capped of with epoxy that has a
lot of brass shavings mixed in it.
Using Old English Dark Furniture Oil to stain
the wood works great for having the symbols show
up because the stain makes the etchings darker.
