Tips

When there is not much to staple to

This is a helpful tip if you work on any old pieces that have the wood all/almost gone because of tacks and staples from past upholstering.

I had this rocker brought to me already striped and after I started on it I could see why it had not been recovered yet the wood in many places was gone or so full of holes there was nothing to staple to.

I have found a way to build these voids. You can't use putty or normal wood glue because it dries in a solid fill and is to hard to drive the staples into.

But with a glue that foams up when it is sprayed with water. The foam will take to staples with ease. I is easy to find made of polyurethane and is sold by Elmer's they call it Ultimate Glue.

First I cut strips of thick cardboard and staple them as forms to hold the glue.
Stray the area before and the glue after it is aplied.
In about 15-20 min it foams and fills the voids where the wood is missing see photo above.
While it is still soft you can wipe it so that it is flat with the level you want it filled to.

This is the glue I use, you can get the Gorilla Glue but it is always priced about twice as much
